Kubrick project - Cataloguing
¬ Envisioning Kubrick
¬ Cataloguing the estate
The Stanley Kubrick Estate represents an extensive collection of film materials. Kubrick's house, north of London, served Kubrick, his family and close employees as a residence and workplace. The large estate
offered adequate space for storing research materials on projects that
required lengthy preparation. Numerous items from his film productions, such as technical
equipment, props and an abundance of documents still occupy the premises today.
The combination of residence and workplace enabled Kubrick to be intimately integrated
in all working processes, from research to post production, distribution and
marketing. On the basis of estate materials some of Kubrick's film productions can be
traced from the director's first concept sketches to drafts for ad campaigns, posters
and designs for video and DVD covers.
The Stanley Kubrick Estate is managed by Christiane Kubrick and Jan Harlan. In close
co-operation with the heirs and employees at the location, the Deutsches Filmmuseum had been
engaged with the systematic cataloguing of materials from April to December 2003. In view of
the magnitude and diversity of the material this work will continue for several years. In
an initial step, the
¬ Deutsche Filmmuseum and the
¬ Deutsche Architektur Museum used the database
to prepare an exhibition, which for the first time accessed Kubrick's archives.
